She received a BFA in Fine Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in 2010. Chan has a background in fashion-, graphic- and web design. Her evolution for personal and artistic expression led her to focus on painting with oil on canvas. Jade works from a studio in Long Island City, New York. Artist Statement: "My creative process is part subconscious, part planned and part spontaneous" I am an artist who works primarily in oil on canvas. My work is based on observations interpreted through abstractions and incorporating a feeling of movement. I inject into my work, emotional stages and events from the past interacted with the world I am experiencing now. Growing up in a tumultuous, traditional, and strict Chinese household, in an open foreign country, the Netherlands, I always felt like an outsider looking in, and never belonging in one or the other culture. I now reflect those challenges, conflicts, joys and sorrows in my art. While my work is biographic, I strive to be subtle, and I incorporate elements of my graphic design background to organize my emotions in my work. All images and text copyright Jade Chan
