Artist Bio:
In essence, through my paintings and drawings, I am working out a visual "theory of mind," a consciousness of Earth. The consciousness I envision is composed of a network of systems that make life both possible and awesome, as these systems are becoming severely stressed. I visualize Earth's theory of mind as a collective of diverse species' minds that are, on the one hand, interdependent, and on the other, competing for resources, survival, or domination. A driving concern is the impact of humans beliefs and consumption where we have viewed other species ours for the taking, from a Biblical interpretation that seemingly gave humans dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. (New King James). In this interpretation, the only mind that mattered was the human.

Dominion can be interpreted differently, to encompass a grave responsibility ??? as an ethic of care and empathy. Moreover, there is growing scientific evidence that other species have consciousness, minds, communicative abilities, and perhaps empathy. What would it take to shift our relationship with the non-human? My paintings are based on research on intelligences or consciousness of species and on images of nature under stress due to human actions. My work straddles realism and abstraction to create vignettes of a broader theory of Earth's consciousness, a few species at a time.
