Julie Comnick — Arrangement for a Silent Orchestra

Gallery One at The Factory LIC, LIC,
30-30 47 th Ave, Long Island City, NY 11101
Exhibition: January 9th – February 7th, 2020 @ 5pm – 8pm

Opening Reception and Performance: Thursday, Jan 9, 5-8 pm, featuring a solo violin performance of Beethoven’s Romance in F by the artist, and original and re-worked music by Alex Ring Grey.

LIC Arts Open’s Gallery One at The Factory LIC, presents artist Julie Comnick’s New York debut exhibition Arrangement for a Silent Orchestra, a painting and video project that explores the gradual dissolution of culture in contemporary society through the symbolic ruin of a personal and cultural icon, the violin. Using the violin as a metaphor, Comnick raises questions about the relationship between advancing technology and diminishing cultural heritage, inviting the audience to consider what makes the instrument precious in their own experience, and the impact of its loss.

LIC Gallery Nights 2020

Upcoming Event: January 16th, 2020

Brave the New York winter chill and warm up by the blazing fires of Julie Comnick’s powerfully evocative paintings at The Factory. This month, as some of our artists and curators grapple with the unstable and ever-changing reality of the contemporary world, its fragile political climates, natural catastrophes, wars, and inequality, others take a plunge into the depths of the human psyche in an exploration of color, shapes, and interspatial relations.

Please take this opportunity to support the local arts community, every third Thursday of the month. Long Island City galleries and art venues will open their doors to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. in an after-hours celebration of art and culture.

Works of all kinds shine in LIC Arts Open shows

“Ashes to Gold: The Alchemy of Caroline Bergonzi,” a solo art exhibit of some of her works, is now on view at the LIC Arts Open Gallery at The Factory in Long Island City, one of two fascinating attractions running concurrently in the former furniture warehouse. Both exhibits, curated by Richard Mazda, will remain on view through Sept. 6.

Across the lobby is the other exhibition, “Burn This,” which features the works of some five dozen artists and was inspired by one of them, David Sena. The title was taken from a play of the same name by Lanford Wilson. Sena employs fireworks in his art, using them to make marks on paper, part of a process he has been practicing for 22 years.
