Artist Statement:
THE PRESERVATION OF HERITAGE

How much of our lives are comprised of the combination of nature vs. nurture, free will and pure luck? The Preservation of Heritage series is heavily biographical and is the most intimate body of work I've developed thus far. I was adopted as an infant from an orphanage in Bogota, Colombia in 1987 and was raised in an upper middle class Brooklyn household. This series has been an exercise of self-exploration and has enabled me to tackle my fundamental questions of identity and privilege. My feelings of "in-betweennes"s are reflected in my process, I'm drawn to photography and the archive, I work with cyanotypes, pinhole cameras and digital scanning using found family photos and personal artifacts whose meaning has been lost or altered over time. I'm interested in the interplay of time and decay, the push and pull of simultaneously preserving and destroying something precious. This ongoing series comprises of numerous, small mixed media and photo based works.
