Artist Bio:
Marianne Barcellona earned her B.A. in art from Oberlin College, then moved to New York City, where for the next 30 she years enjoyed a successful career as a freelance photographer, travelling the globe on assignments for major magazines, humanitarian and cultural foundations, and Fortune 500 corporations. But her original desire to paint haunted her, so in the late 1990's she earned a Certificate in Painting from The New York Studio School. Ever since, she has used her photography and her travels as source material and inspiration for her art. Her greatest joy is visiting unfamiliar places and gathering ideas and images that she can develop into paintings back in her New York studio. Barcellona's work has been included in over 80 exhibitions, and awarded fellowships at internationally-renowned artist residencies, including Ucross Foundation (Wyoming), Constance Saltonstall Foundation (New York), Jentel Foundation (Wyoming), Brush Creek Arts Foundation (Wyoming), The Elizabeth Foundation (New York), I-Park Foundation (Connecticut), Playa (Oregon), and Baer Art Center (Iceland).

Artist Statement:
My work is about Presence. Sometimes it's about my presence in a situation or a space, and sometimes it's about the Presence that exists outside of me looking back at me. Always, though, my work is a search for verification that I exist and have been here.
