Artist Statement:
My current body of work is part of an ongoing series titled "Boned Bodies" which as mainly composed of paintings. My work explores exterior means of beautification. I incorporate fabric such as lace as a vehicle to construct surface information.
The term "Boned Bodies" is a historical reference to the corset, a description and reference that appears in 16th Century dress. The corset marks a fundamental change in clothing and tailoring and a shift in the body's role to conform to the fashionable garb worn.
I choose to use lace as a material in the art making process to render a new purpose for the decorative fabric, but I also embrace the fabrics restorative properties of beauty and allure. My practice considers notions of standardization, as well as self-imposing limitations, and I physically craft the painting surface through repetition of paint layers and material. Tailored scenarios are composed of frill, imagined place, and are void of discernible human form.
